Blog Response #11

When an author writes a book, he or she has a purpose as to why he/she is sharing this story.  This lesson or theme plays out throughout the book.  Share what you believe the author's purpose was for writing this book.  What lesson do you feel he/she wanted you to learn?  (In responding to other's blog posts, try to connect your theme with other's books.)

  1. I think Chanel Miller wrote this book, to help her let go and move on from the entire experience. Writing a book about her sexual assault allowed her to let out her emotions, all the fear and rage she experienced throughout the grueling trial. Another reason was probably to raise awareness and tell people a little bit about how victims are treated following a sexual assault. There is constant victim blaming and throughout the trial, the defense tried to trick her and blame her for the incident, but Chanel stood her ground. This book is influential and will bring awareness to sexual assaults and the rape culture on college campuses.

    1. In my book it kind of gives the same impression. These women code breakers were not allowed to talk about their job until 5 years ago and in this book they finally got to let everything out.

    2. My book also deals with the characters having to let go and move on from a past experience. It taught the characters that it is ok to feel their emotions and let others know what is going on throughout their life. Their past experience was only a loss which is still hard to deal with, but nothing like sexual assault.

    2. The Book Thief has a resemblant theme of doing the right thing against the odds, as Liesel's family is harboring a Jewish man in their basement during peak German Nazism, which is clearly a deplorable transgression in the eyes of most Germans.

  3. Stephen King wrote "Misery," with the purpose of telling readers about the extent of obsession. Paul Sheldon in this book is a famous author who is kidnapped and held prisoner by an obsessive fan. King uses this book to show the worst case scenario of an obsessive fan meeting their idol. He wants the reader to learn that although he may not have have experienced something as severe as Paul did, he does deal with crazy fans. He used this book to show what people could do to him if they were as crazy as Annie in the story.

  4. I think Elie wrote this book because he he first off I think he wanted to share his story because I feel like it might have been eating away at him and he wanted to get it off his chest about what he went through. And I also think he wrote it to actually tell about real things that actually happened kind the holocaust. I also think he wrote it so something like this never happens again because some people don't realize what the Jews went through to survive.

  5. I think my author wrote The Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise to teach people that you can not recover from the past if you just bury it away. In the book a character lost loved ones in the past and he chose to never talk about it. He would shut it down immediately whenever brought up. Later in the book the author finally had him face that he needed to talk about it to move on. When he had the character talk about it I think he learned more about himself and allowed him to have a better relationship with his daughter. It also gave him the opportunity to be happy as a person yet again, and did not always have to carry around that burden. He now knows that his loved ones may be gone, but they are still with him no matter what he goes through.

  6. The purpose of Barry Lyga writing I Hunt Killers is he enjoys describing the gore and mental state of a kid who had a rough life. It is insane how he could even think of all this. The lesson I think he is trying to share is there are always two sides of the crime scene and that kids have PTSD just as much as adults. The theme of this book is definitely murder mystery and action because of all the scenes of Jazz sneaking into morgues, crime scenes, etc...

In the beginning of the book both of them went about life without thinking about the past. Once they faced their past they were able to live a much happier life. It allowed them to feel all the things they needed to the past few years.

  8. i think Khaled Hosseini purpose for this book was to show impact that life can have on a person like all the little things can change big things for example if Hassan and Assef didn't meet in the ally when they where kids Hassan wouldn't have left Kabul and the Assef wouldn't have taken Hassan son out of the orphanage, then Amir would have never been beaten. i also think it has some teachings about the war in Afghanistan and what was going on there at the time.

    1. The Book Thief has a similar idea of little things coming back to make big changes later on. The prime example of this is when Hans Hubermann befriended Erik Vandenburg, a Jewish man, during World War I, and approximately twenty-five years later, his son Max moved into their basement as a harbored Jew, because he was given Hans' address from his mother, who got it when Hans visited after the war when Erik was killed.

  9. I believe that the purpose of writing this book was to understand how the behavior analysis unit was created in the FBI. I think the main theme is to keep working even if no one believes in you. I say this because when he first started no one was supporting him or believed in what he was doing and slowly kept working until it worked.

  10. I believe the author's purpose in writing this story was to share how there things that many women do who do not get the appreciation for. In the book Code Girls thousands of women worked for the government and breaking codes to help win World War II. The women were told that they had to keep their job top secret in which every single one of them did. Not only did they keep it a secret from their family and friends at time during the war but even after the war had ended and the women did not even talk about it until 5 years ago. This makes me believe that the purpose for Liza Mundy writing this book was to show the appreciation of the women and how they had just as much part of the World War II than the men did and they would not have been able to win without them. Now today women are even able to serve our country which shows women are just as capable to do things like this as men.

    1. My book is a little similar, as sexual assault was not discussed in the past, and women are typically blamed and revictimized, even with awareness to the issue. Most victims tend to keep the assault a secret from their family and friends to keep others from pitying them.

  11. In my book I feel that the author's purpose would be to try and explain or show what it was like back then in the 1900's. Through the stories and adventures that Frank Glaser had and experience. I think that the theme in what the author is trying to show would be to always keep trying and believe in yourself. I think that the Author wrote this book because he saw what an amazing job Frank did as an outdoors man and the way of life, he created for himself.

  16. The Book Thief is a little ambiguous in regards to a theme, because it's mostly been biographical of sorts. I imagine I'll be able to learn more about why Markus Zusak whipped up this tale later on, but for now, it's really just going over Liesel's coming-up. There is an aspect of the pressure that must have weighed on German families who harbored Jewish "fugitives" in their homes, and Liesel's foster family is one of them. There's also the concept of Liesel's descent into stealing more and more commonly, going from the sake of being able to eat to almost just for the fun of it. Those are only a couple off the top of my head, and it will hopefully become more ambiguous as the story goes on.

  18. In the book Anne Frank's Tales From the House Behind, I feel her message that she was trying to let everyone know was that she was trapped. They were in the middle of the Holocaust and along with her fear, Anne wanted us to know that her final 2 years she had created a place to forget her surroundings. She wanted the reader to understand her love for God as well. These were all actual letters she had wrote but instead of writing directly to the reader, they were to a character she created and put into story form. I believe this was done so if they were found they would not know the real story of what she had seen the last 2 years of her life. It made the reader have to "read between the lines"

  19. I think the lesson in Girl In Pieces is that anyone can overcome their struggles. Charlie is trying to put the pieces of her life back together on her road to recovery. I feel that the reason Kathleen Glasgow wrote this book was to form a connection with readers who are struggling with their issues. Not many books go into detail on self harm or the reasons, but this book does a perfect job on explaining everything. Since mental health has become such a big thing, I also think she based the book off of that as well. I feel that Kathleen wants us to get to know everyone’s story before we make judgements on the decisions they do or have done. Try to grasp a better understanding of the person they see or have met.

  21. Within the book, the author said she wrote the book when she was in a dark place. During this time, Abike-Iyimide moved to go to college and while there she felt like an outcast because she was one of the only poc there. 22. I believe the lesson for Start Something that Matters is that everyone is important and everyone deserve the essentials to live a happy healthy life. In the book Blake Mycoskie started the shoe company TOMS to hopefully give shoes to kids in Argentina who don't have them. He does this by selling one pair of shoes he gives a pair to kids in Argentina. He started the business in a small apartment and made roughly 200 pairs and went back to America to sell them. He's been looked at different by everyone as a young child.
