Blog Response #6

In all five novels, the main character or characters face adversity in one way or another.  Describe how you view the character's challenges in your book, and talk about how your character handles the hardships and struggles.  If you were in your main character/characters situation, how would you handle yourself?  What would you do?

Comments

  1. I had the book A Long Way Gone and the characters challenges were sad and unimaginable. I would say the challenges were sad because of how a bunch of people got killed, people got separated from their families and lost their homes, and towns were destroyed because of the rebels, The challenges were unimaginable because I can't imagine go through such tragedy as these people went through. The main Character Ishmael handles this in a better manner than I think I could he as he loses all his family he learns how to deal with his anger along with learning survival techniques and having to find food and water to survive. If I was in this situation at first I would probably just want to give up and think I can't do this especially if I lost my family. Then I would pick myself right back up and try to do anything to survive like Ishmael did.

    1. I have to agree that losing my family would make it hard to survive. It's good that you would try to survive.

  2. In "I am Malala,"' Malala and her family face numerous challenges. They are in constant fear for their lives and always wondering where the Taliban are located. Malala handles everything extremely well and remains calm, even when schools are bombed and her family begins receiving death threats. If I was in Malala's situation, I do not think I would handle myself as well as her, and I probably would have abandoned my home long before they even thought about leaving.

    2. I think it would be pretty scary to have to live in constant fear you whole life always wondering what is going to happen next. That is very impressive that Malala can handle it all so well. I on the other hand would not be able to remain calm if the school was bombed or my family was getting death threats. That is a lot for one person to handle on his or her own.

  3. in "Night" Elie and his family face numerous challenges. They lost their home and got separated by the Nazis. They also have to try to survive working in concentration camps with the Nazis beating them if they mess up one time. Elie is handling the situations well by remaining calm and just doing what the Nazis tell him to do. If i was in Elie's shoes i wouldn't handle myself as well and i would probably try to rebel or escape the camps.

  4. In the book Night Elie faces challenges that nobody can probably relate to in today's world. He loses his family from the concentration camps he went to and sees his father die right next to him. he had to suffer from extreme starvation and always had to work as a laborer. He was able to stay strong through prayer and believing that it would all end he just had to hold on. He handled everyday as it was his last so if he left the world knowing he did his hardest. I think that I would have handled it differently and did stuff differently, but I still think that it would have been almost impossible for anyone.

    1. Spoiler alert.. I did not know that his father gets killed right in front of him. This is horrible. The one person he held onto to see him through this gets killed. I would have had a hard time seeing this if I were in Elie's shoes. I truly is a survival game and how much can the Nazis break you before you end it all?

    2. agreed when they were beating his father in front they wanted to see if they could get a reaction from Elise but he was smarter then they thought and just kept silent.

    3. I agree that you can't really compare to the events that they had to go through. I agree that I would handle it differently but I am not sure exactly how I would handle it.

  5. I am reading the book Night. In the book the main character has to go through the Holocaust. This is a major challenge for him as his life is at risk and he has no control over his own life and has no way out of it. I think that most of the time he is in shock as he doesn't know how to or have much of a reaction to anything that happens. If I was in this situation I am not really sure how I would handle it I would try to survive and that's about it

    1. I agree with the challenges, but i think he reacted more on doing what the Nazis say and just staying calm, and i agree that i would really just act this way to try and survive.

    2. I think that being in the characters position would be a thing of nightmares. I dont think anyone in our day would be able to manage those challenges.

    3. I think being in the holocaust would be very hard and traumatic. It’s also very sad that they got put in concentration camps just because of what they believed in. I think that if it where is in those concentration camps none us us would survive because we are used to what we are doing now.

    4. In my book, Malala is in a similar situation. She has to opportunity to leave, but she does not want to. Pakistan is her home and even though she has the opportunity, she feels the need to protect the people around her and fights for their rights. Even with the Taliban targeting her, she never stopped speaking for what she believed in.

  6. In The Kite Runner all the characters face different challenges that some handle well and others handle not the best. Hassan handles getting raped fairly well, but he does not talk about it and after it happened he became a very quiet kid. After this experience he pushed Amir away for a few days, but then acted like everything was normal. If I was in his position I would become quiet and push people away because going through something like this is a terrifying experience. I definitely would not be able to let a few days pass and then act like nothing happened.

    1. I feel as though it was not Hassan pushing Amir away, but the other way around. After the situation happened Amir almost pretended as if Hassan did not exist. He is also part of the reason that Hassan and his dad moved away. He knew what happened to Hassan and as his friend he should have helped, but Hassan in Amir's eyes was only his servant.

      Delete
    2. I think Amir was doing more pushing away, but Hassen was also shutting himself out due to the tragic event that he had just gone through. I also believe I would push myself away because it is something hard to go through and no one should have to go through this.

    3. I felt it was is amir's control one hundred percent that Hassan had to leave and he most definitely regretted it after the fact of seeing them walk away looking out of his window.

  7. In “A Long Way Gone” I think that the challenges that Ismael faces are way beyond what a 12 year old should be experiencing. Ishmael has had to live in fear for months and still going. He’s seen everything under the sun when it comes to death. And he has almost had to experience death after being captured. He has also been separated from his group of friends and his brother since having to run from the village he was just in. The kid has been starved, attacked, tied up, threatened, had rumors spread about him, etc… he must feel so alone since nobody trusts anyone anymore. I think how he handles these hardships makes him very strong. He thinks about memories from better times to keep him going. Personally I don’t think I could handle being in this situation. It’s so intense that I would just want to give up.

    3. I think it’s very brave of him to go through all that being 12. If I had to go through that at 12 I don’t think I would survive. Going through all those challenges and getting through them makes him a fighter and and that he’s willing to not give up.

  9. in "A Long Way Gone" Ishmael bae is a 12 year old boy who is running from the rebels with a couple of his friends. if I was in his shoes I don't really know if i would be as brave as he is. he has to rummage through villages that have been abandoned to try and find food. there was many times where he had been caught by the rebels and was able to hold himself together better than most twelve year old's would. i dont think at that age i would have been able to last as long as he is.

But ones Baba and his son moved to America id say everything got interesting for the better. He finally got to go to the bar with his son and bought him a new but old truck for him to go to collage. I feel as if Amir and Baba left for America to escape there past.

  10. my book is A long Way Gone by Ishmaul, i think his biggest struggle in the book is finding a safe place to stay. he is always running away from danger and protecting his life for all he can. with that being said ishamul handles these chanelleges in unique ways. he trys to swim with a familily in the river and become friends but they made him leave because he could be danger. then he gets captured by fisherman being thought of as bad boy but then he is seen as good and gets to stay with them, so it started out bad but then turned ouut good and had good place to stay for a while. lastly if i was Ishmaul i have no idea how i would handle the situation because i can never imagine being hunted down by rebels and would never want to, i would prolly be scared to death adn have no idea what to do besides run till i die.

  11. In I am Malala she faces a bunch of tough challenges. She has to go to a new town where she doesn’t know anyone and she gets shot for standing up for what she believes in. I think I would give up if I had to go through what Malala had to go through. I believe that it’s not worth to get shot over girls education. Yes I believe that all girls should get education but that wouldn’t get done if I would get shot and could possibly die. If she died how would she be able to get girls the education they need?

  13. In the book a long way gone a lot of the challenges ishaml has to go through have to be very tough decision because he cant trust nobody because you don't know who are rebels and who are good people. I think it is crazy all the things he has been through and I'm only like a third through the book. All the life and death decision he has to make to survive. If I was Ishmael shoes I don't know if i could go through the pain and decisions he has to go through to stay alive. I would just keep running for my life till I find safety somewhere.

    1. Even though there aren't many rebel spies, Ishmael has not come across any yet. Most of them own up to being a rebel and don't take any survivors. I definitely would not be able to deal with all he has been through and it is insane how bad his living conditions are. he doesn't know much better compared to America or anything, but he knows that those villages are still not updated

  14. In the book "Night", Elie faces many difficult times. He had to endure pain, loss, terror, torture and emotional trauma. Elie was not really given a choice on how to handle this. Or I should say he had only 2 choices, follow as he was told or Die. He had to watch people being beaten. shot, burned, and hung all the while not knowing when his turn would be next or if he could survive this all. Elie learned to create a spiritual world to live in and he always made sure to keep his one remaining family member close. his father. I too am closer to my father as most boys are. feeling this bond would help me but I honestly do not think I could go through what Elie went through. I have too strong of a voice and I would have met my God somewhere along this journey.

In situations like those where there seems to only be the option of succumb to those above you or face the consequences of your actions, I believe the only way to live properly is in your own world. From what it sounds, I feel like your main character actually may have improved his mental state by creating his own world in his head.

  15. Thought out the book A Thousand Splendid Suns the main character Mariam has always been the outsider. Ever sense she was born she was known as the bastard child because her father and mother had her out of wed lock. All she ever wanted was to be a part of her fathers family but her mother wasn't okay with that so when so Mariam left her mother hung herself. Then she went to live with her father and he sent her off to get married to a 40 year old man even though she was only 15 and he was very abusive. he caused her to have 7 miss carnages. Over all I believe Mariam has always gotten the bad side of life ever sense she was born. Mariam didn't really do anything to get herself out of the satiation though. If I was in her situation I honestly wouldn't know what to do.

    2. What's unfortunate is that I'm not sure Mariam could've done much considering her gender in the time period and the location. Any verbal resistance would be met with physical abuse, and women get stoned (and worse) for anything close to the sort. It truly was a rough card she was dealt.

  16. In my book, "The Kite Runner", Amir faces a few difficult situations and problems in his young years. One of these is when he and Hassan win the kite competition and Amir makes him get the second place kite. When Amir goes searching for Hassan he finds him and can only sit and watch the event unfolding in front of him. Hassan is backed into a corner by The book's first antagonist Assef and his gang. Hassan refuses to give up the kite and Assef proceeds to sexually assault him because of it. Amir pretended like he did not see a thing and he can not live with himself for it. To deal with the internal conflict, he gets rid of Hassan by planting an expensive watch and some money in his servant quarters. Amir then says that Hassan stole it. If I were in Amir's shoes in the situation in the alley, I would have stood up and fought back against the bullies. If I could not stand up and fight back against them, I would see myself as just as bad as them. I would not be able to live with myself after that decision.

    1. I agree with you if I was in Amir's shoes and saw that Hassan was cornered I would not just let something happen, I would have gone in and done my best to help him. I also think it was very rude of Amir to plant the money and watch and blame Hassan for it just to solve the problem of knowing what happened to him. I do not know what was going through Amir's head when he made the decision to do such a thing.

    2. I agree with you because if I were in Amir's position and saw what was being done to Hassen I would stand up for him because they are best friends and that's what best friends do for each other. The reason I think he planted the watch and money on Hassen was due to the fact that he could not live with himself for not standing up for him so he wanted to get rid of him so he didn't have to think about it every time he looked at him.

Her mother nana was a little rough on her and her dad Jalil did not want to be seen with her since she is a sin. 3. A lot of people are scared of him and the group that he is in most of the time and some even try to kill him. I agree we wouldn't really know how to be in his shoes because he is fighting for his life day in and day out.

  31. While reading the book a long way gone. Ishmael faces a lot of adversity throughout, many problems seem to occur. The problems are from one group of people and that is the rebels. From always running to seeing the death of people you truly care about, I don't know if I could truly do it. There is always constant running and never know when your gonna eat or even have something to drink but the worst part is if you get caught your dead so just that fear of what is going to happen next if you fall asleep and wake up to the rebels.

  32. In a Long Way Gone, Ishmael has a lot of night terrors and headaches due to the violence he sees on a daily basis so that is how his mind is reacting to war, but Ishmael seems to only have anger left in him after he has seen his friends and family die in the hands of the rebels. It hard to even imagine myself in that situation because of how terrible it is, but I think I would act the same way Ishmael does. Just thinking about it makes me mad.

    1. I have no clue how I would be able to cope with in either because i have never been in a situation even close to what his situation is. He is trying to get killed everyday and sometimes in the book things don't seem as bad as they actually are.

  33. in Night there are a lot of challenges that Eliezer has to go though he sees people get hanged shot and beat. but, I think that the hardest thing for him is that he knows he cannot do anything to help them or something will happen to him. Eliezer cannot really do anything in his position to really overcome the challenges. Besides staying strong and have hope. If I was in his shoes I honesty would not know what I would do. I would have already given up.

  34. In my book a long way gone Ishmaels challenges are pretty much war and hunger. I see Ishmaels challenges as something you never thought a child would have to go through. He definitely handles it better then I think anyone else would be able to. However, Ishmael has turned to brown brown a drug made from gun powder and cocaine. While this is not something I would do I still consider Ishmael a strong boy. I don't think I would be able to handle this so therefore I would probably just die.

  35. In a Thousand Splendid Suns, Mariam goes through the hardships of her families neglect and loss and also her problem with her Miscarriage as her being pregnant had helped Mariam forget about most of her problems.

  36. In the kite runner many of the characters face different challenges and they all handle it different ways. One big situation that Hassen faced was getting raped. He handled it in a way that most people would and kept quiet about it for a few days and pushed himself away, but this pushing away may have made things worse for him. Since he pushed himself away Hassen and Amir are no longer close like they used to be and now Hassen and his father are moving away. Amir knew exactly what happened to Hassen and if they were friends he would have helped but he was just a servant. If I were Hassen I think I would probably handle the situation the same way and distance myself because this is not something that is easy to go through and no one understands it until they experience the same thing so it's hard to even talk about it to anyone.

  37. One of the main hardships that Ishmael goes through is just his life throughout the war. He is alone for some points of time. Some points he is with others and he gets separated from them and some people would even die along his journey. Everywhere they went they were scared the rebels were going to attack. The thought of seeing his family again is what I think drives him to continue on his journey and to try and continue to safety. It would be very difficult for me to handle what Ishmael was going through and for one i can not even imagine the struggles mentally and physically that are taking place on him.

  38. In I Am Malala, she faces a lot of challenges. The whole book is mainly about the challenges she faces. With the taliban, her country, many other things that are unexplainable. While she faces many horrible challenges she never really explains how they make her feel. Instead she seems to tie it back to how her family is handling everything. Which shows that she is a person that puts her family first. But at this point in the novel i was hoping to better understand how everything is effecting her because it seems like alot for one person to go through. If i were in her position i would probably worry about my family first as well.

  39. The book I am reading is kite runner there are many challenges the characters in this book have to face. For example Hassan was raped and he will have do deal with that for the rest of his life and with him being raped makes stress for other people around him also. Hassan and Amir end up getting split up because Hassan and his father moved away that is a major challenge for the both of them because they were basically always together and they only had each other.

  42. in the book Night, Eliezer faces challenges everyday that we could never imagine going through today. He loses his family when he is only 15 years old to the Germans in a concentration camp. he also witnesses people being hung, shot, beaten, including his dad being beat in front of his face. he cant do anything about it or he will be killed, i think that is the hardest part for him knowing he cannot help them. if i was in his shoes, i would have gave up and let them kill me, i am not that strong and i hate the cold. i dont have the motivation to keep fighting for my life knowing i will most likely die

  43. I am currently reading the book "Kite runner". characters has to face many challenges as in loosing Hassan his best friend that he grew up with over a selfish mistake he had made because he was mad. Amir also has to live an everyday life knowing that him or his family could get murdered by the Taliban at any point. Hassan also had to face the challenge of being raped which effected not only him but everyone who he was close with.

  44. Throughout the book " Running Loose" many characters face adversity. the first example would be that when Hassan gets raped in the alley way by some other boys. this not only effected him but also everyone around him especially Amir. Another conflict of adversity that a character had to face in this book is when Amir blames Hassan for stealing his birthday money. This conflict is solved by Baba making Ali and Hassan move out of the house. Lastly, at the end of the book Amir enters a house that is ran by the Taliban to find out where Sohrab is at. just before he trys to leave he is beaten with brass knuckles and is left unconscious which is why Rahim had to go into the house and carry him on his shoulders back to the car.
