Blog Response 2

Choose a character from your book.  How do you envision this character?  Use your words to describe how this character looks, acts, and behaves.  Also, discuss the impact this character has had on the story up to this point. Would you be friends with this character, or would you avoid him/her?  Why? What role does this character play in your book?  If this character was not in the book, would the book change?  Why or why not??  (Remember to give  specific details  and a complete blog entry, and  don't forget to comment on  two  other blog entries!   Happy Blogging! :)

  1. The character I’m choosing is Jen. She’s a very nice person and and wants what is best for her and her sister. There household is rough and her dad and step dad have both sexually and physically abused her and she is trying to make sure that doesn’t happen to her sister. I would like to be friend with Jen because she’s very humble and looks out for her friends even when she’s in the hospital.

    3. I agree that Jen us a wonderful person. She has hurdles to overcome about her step dad situation and I believe and hope she will find a way out at the end of the story. I think her role will become bigger towards the end of the story. They have said a lot about her so far so I think she is a big part of Dillon's story.

    5. I feel bad for Jen. She doesn't deserve this. I wish her mother would be a better role so this wouldn't have happen to her. This is something she has had to face alone and its sad. She deserves better.

  2. I envision Carter as a taller skinny kid but has a good amount of muscle and fairly athletic. He is a hard working kid and is very motivated and also enjoys playing football. He affects the story by being Louie's best friend and he always has his back. The book would change a lot if Carter wasn't in the book. He always has Louie's back and helps him though things and without Carter Louie would be kind lost and not really have anyone around him. I would be friends with him because he is trust worthy and always has his friends back

  3. I envision Boomer as a heavy set guy with short hair, who walks around as if he is the toughest guy in school. He behaves with a mindset that he is the strongest and fights anyone who he disagrees with. Boomer impacts the story, as he is a bully and disagrees with everything Louie does. He plays the role of a bully and lives up to that standard, except when Carter is involved. Carter is the only person Boomer will not mess with. If Boomer was not in the book, there would be no fights and Washington would never have been hit. If Washington had never been hit, Louie would still be playing football and the whole story line would change drastically. Boomer is not the main character, but his presence greatly impacts the story.

  4. I chose boomer as my character from the book Running Loose. I envision this character as a big well built person that doesn't get pushed around. He is kind of the town bully nobody wants to mess with him. he behaves as if he runs everything and you listen to him or he will make things worse. Boomer has a really big impact of Louie because he kind of shapes him into the person he is. Not necessarily in a good way but in a way that he changes Louie so that he sees things differently. Without boomer the book wouldn't have any suspense because he is the antagonist.

  5. i am reading the book running loose, i choose the character Boomer. i envision him as big guy that has a lot muscle. i think he is a jerk, he is mean to people and thinks he is the best. so far he is the bad guy in the story and enemies with the main character. if he was not in the book Louie would still more then likely be on the football team still. also Washington would not have been taken out of the game.

  6. I character I would choose would probably be Jennifer because they have been talking about her a lot and we know probably the most about her. I envision her to be a taller skinny girl that has more of a basketball build. I also see her as kind of little cocky because she is really good at basketball and she thinks she's the best. Right now the role of Jennifer is kind of the main character because they talk about her soo much. If she wasn't in the book it would definitely change a big part in it because she is one of the main characters and she means a lot to the book.

  7. i am going to chose the character Nortie, from my book Stotan. i envision Nortie as a big guy that 6 foot tall and 250 pounded. real rough around the edges bruised up bad and black eyes. the impact Nortie has on this book is heartbreaking to alot of the charcters and the reader. especially when he told the story about his brother Jeremy. i would be friends with Nortie because i would feel bad for him and want to help. if nortie wasnt in the book it would change alot becuase you wouldnt hear about his dad beating their family and one less friend in the swim group. happy blogging :():

    3. I honestly have a hard time envisioning Nortie as a bulky buff guy, mainly because there are already some well-built members of the group (i.e. Jeff and Lion), and also because he might've been more privy to stepping up to his father if he had the size to boot.

      Delete
    4. @Noah Johnson i feel like after being beat up so much by his dad and such a rough and tough life he would become bulk and tough, just a guy that can take anything and not cry abt it.

  8. Stacy, to me, seems like a nice person. She's caring, and always cheers Dillon on during his triathlon. Stacy, despite being Dillon's best friend, and his crush, hasn't made a big impact on the story. I suppose I would be friends with her. I would consider Stacy to be a side character, bordering on main character. If she was not in the book, I do believe it would greatly change, because she is Dillon's main love interest.

    4. I like that you choose to pick Stacy, even though she has not made a very big impact on the plot. I agree that if she were not a character in the book at all, the story would be a lot different. I would like to think that Dillon would be a very different person had she not been there.

    5. I feel Stacey is a good person as well as it shows when she talks about her baby and would do anything for the baby.

  9. One character that I think stands out from the rest is lion. I envision lion as a strong man that isn't afraid of anything Lion plays a big role in the story for a couple different reasons. He is the guy that is always pushing other people to their max efforts. Without lion in this group I don't think it would be the same because he is the strong guy of the group. he doesn't think about things he just does them like burning the stack of equal rights paper during school. I think out of all the group members, I would get along with lion the best. I feel like him and I would be good friends because he stands up for his beliefs and isn't afraid to do something about it, and is a hard, dedicated worker.

  10. I am reading and I choose Preston as my character to describe. Preston comes off to me as a person who has a good heart, but does not let it show. From what I have read so far, he seems like an individual that got involved with the wrong crowd. Who knows what he would be like if he had not associated with the warlocks. Preston serves as a secondary protagonist due to the fact that just about every other chapter is a letter to him from Dillon. Preston has had the biggest impact on the story, just for the simple fact that his presence and suicide caused Dillon to be the way he is.

Preston has a problems with how he deals with his pain but if there was a way Dillion could help save Preston, do you think it would have worked?

      Delete
    3. For being only in the first chapter, Preston has made a huge impact in this book. Without him and his suicide and putting all the pressure on his brother Dillon, the book wouldn't be the same because I feel the story is seen through the eyes of Dillon after Preston's death. Do you agree?

  11. I choose lion as my character from the book Stotan. I envision this character as a tall strong and muscular person that know one would mess with. He is like the friend groups tough guy. lion walks around like he is king and everyone else should bow down to him. lion makes the book interesting and not boring. lions friend group is the only people that he wont mess with. although lion is not the main character I think that he is the most interesting.

  12. I chose the character Dale Thornton from the book Staying Fat For Sarah Byrnes. I envision this character as tall, strong, and muscular who wears dark clothes with a lot of tattoos. He comes off as the guy who acts like a big shot and tries to scare everyone. He is always trying to start fights and likes to argue. This character has not left a big impact so far, but he has told others some things that will impact other characters lives. I would most likely avoid this character because if he acts tough and tries to start fights. If Dale was not in my book it would be different because he is knows things about the main character, Sarah, that others do not.

  13. One character in my book Running Loose that stands out to me is Boomer. I envision this character as the bully of high school, he will do everything in his power just to make sure you have a hard time. Boomer just looks mean I feel like and he's just mean in general. This character has impacted the story negatively. He is the reason that Louie quit football. I would not be friends with this character because he's very mean and he just seems like a loser who thinks he is all this. If Boomer was not in the book the story would change, Louie would not have someone who is constantly mean to him every day. Also I do not think Louie would have quit football, and the football team probably would not be as successful without Boomer.

  14. The character I’m choosing is Eric, which is the main character of the book. This character used to be very overweight but has slimmed down since weightlifting and swimming. There aren’t very many descriptions on him mother than people commenting on his weight. He has a very carefree attitude but also knows when to be serious. He cares about the people he’s close to. Sometimes he likes to get on people’s nerves for fun. Eric is also very understanding of his own emotions and other peoples which I think is an important characteristic in a person. This character is what holds the story together in my opinion since it’s from his viewpoint. His presence is what makes this story complete. I feel like I would be friends with this character because I like his personality and his beliefs. If Eric wasn’t in this story I don’t think it wouldn’t be that interesting to read. I wouldn’t mind seeing it from Sarah’s point of view but Eric’s life is more interesting to me and so is is way of thinking.

Even with recent arguments with her mother she also seems like she's a fighter. the role she plays in the book right now is uncertain but she will have something to do with the main character. Although she has experienced rough things in her life I think she tries to hide it from others. I also agree she is going to have a huge role in the book and Dillon. I think if Jen was not in the story I think it would change drastically. The whole first chapter was about her and her basketball game. That leads me to believe the ending is going to involve her.

He is very polite and caring. He is always making sure everyone else is ok before himself. i would definitely be friends with Nortie. 19. The character I am writing about from Stotan! is Max. Max Il Song is the coach for the swim team, and the organizer of Stotan Week. I'd picture him as a decently-musculed, six-foot man of Asian descent (his parents are from Seoul, South Korea, after all). The narrator acknowledges that they don't really know much about Max as a person: "He's one of those guys you only know by what they DO. You have to guess how they ARE."

As I stated prior, Max is the instructor of Stotan Week, an exacting series of four hour workouts that lasts five days. While he can be aggressive with his training techniques for the swimmers, the group of main characters still admire him, and view him as a fair role model. I wouldn't mind being friends with him, simply because he appears to have a good head on his shoulders.

If Max were not in the book, the book would likely not exist; Stotan Week is quite literally the inspiration for the book title, and the main characters would certainly never have heard of a "Stotan" if not for Max.

  20. Dale from staying fat for Sarah Byrns is a big guy. He is not very bright, but that does not stop him from taking your lunch money. Dale is one of Sarah's few "friends" and the first one she came out to about her secret. I do not think I would enjoy the company of Dale because he is a bit of a bully. Without Dale the story would loose a few of its minor conflicts and probably be less interesting.

  21. I am going to talk about Louie from my book. I picture him as myself, as I do with most main characters. Louie has a sense of humor that is similar to my own. He is mostly pretty calm, but when something pisses him off he clearly shows his anger. He stands up for what he knows is right and that is very admirable. I would probably be great friends with him. 22. I choose Jen as a character from Chinese Handcuffs. I envision her as a tall brunette girl who is athletic. I believe that Jen that is tall because she plays basketball and is really good at it. I think that Jen behaves at a bad kid because she thinks she's better than everyone in this sport, but in her own way she can be nice. I picture Jen as a brunette with brown eyes, kind of skinny. Jen made an impact in this book because she talks about how every guy that her mom has been with has molested her since she was younger. I feel like I would become friends with Jen, she sounds like she can be a good friend because she is smart, kind and sporty. Jen plays a role in this book as a flashback but not in real life. 23. The character I chose from my book is Jen. The majority of the start of the book was about her. I envision her as a tall athletic person. Jen behaves and acts as a mom to her younger sister Dawn. Jens home life is rough her father figures have sexually abused her and her mother does not believe her. Jen has made a huge impact on this story. The whole beginning was her basketball game against the toughest team. Jen has made an impact on Dillon's life after Preston has died. I would be friends with this character because she seems like a nice caring person. I find her caring because in the scene when she was in the hospital she made sure her coach took Dawn home so she was not alone with the step dad. So far Jens role is a supporter for Dillon. Once his brother passed away he has been more interested in her to keep his mind off things. Yes the book would change if Jen was not in it. Dillon would not have a support system. Jens story is also adding context to the story and giving us a different perspective.

He doesn't seem to speak too much, but when he does he definitely is worth listening to. Even when he says nothing his actions show what he wants to say. I would totally want to be friends with him and the other boys he hangs around just because they seem like really chill people but we see throughout the story they will do anything for another. The why he acts would be very kind and caring because he does not want anyone to feel the same way he does with what has happened to him. He would also be a great friend to have and the class clown. The way he behaves would be very polite has manners and always does what he is asked. Nortie has been a big part of this book with how his life has been with his family, he has a very abuse dad, and his brother killed himself when he was only 13 years-old. He worked at a daycare but when he got mad he hit a kid and didn't know what to do so he quite his job and he is scared that he will end up like his dad. I would for sure be friends with this character, he is very nice and he goes through a lot. His role is the main character walkers best friend. 29. the character I choose from running loose was carter, i just imagine him as this really athletic kid that does not really care for any of the drama or events going on throughout the book. as i read the book carter seems like a good friend but does not involve himself with everything, he stands up for Louie against boomer and that's really the most he will get involved.

    2. Can you relate to this character at all? And if so, how?

    3. What do you think would change if Carter quit football when Louie did? I think the whole book wouldn't be the same and coach and town reputation wouldn't be the same.

  30. the character i chose was Elaine from my book Stotan. i envision this character as a tall girl with long brown hair. i feel like shes tall with long arms too because she is a good swimmer so i feel like her long arms would make it good. i feel that she is one of "the boys" in her friend group since she only hangs with the boys on the swim team. if i were to meet her someday i feel like she would be a great friend to have because she seems nice, loyal, funny. the role she plays in my book is the guys best friend. she hangs out with the 4 boys on the swim team and is a really good swimmer but is not on the swim team with them. if she was not in the book, i feel like this book would change because then we wouldnt have a girls perspective in the book.

  31. I am reading Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes and the character I choose is Eric. I envision him as the bigger kid who still is athletic but does not let being "fat" make him the worst person on the team he still pushes himself just as hard as everyone else on the swim team. I would choose to be friends with Eric because he treats Sarah very well as his friend and he has always been there for her ever since her accident and I think it's always good to have someone like that in your life. If Eric was not in the book then the whole book just would not make sense because he is the main character and just makes everything fall into place.

  32. The character I chose from the story is Dillon. I feel like he is a shorter guy, but he looks in shape because he run marathons. The impact he has had so far is huge because he is one of the main characters. if he was not in the book, it was be a completely different story because it would only be Jen.

  33. The character i chose from my story is Nortie. While walker is the main character and should be the most interesting one, I think thatt Nortie carries the whole story. While i still think the story is boring, the only interesting parts that have happened so far involves Nortie. I personally feel like based off of Noties personality that he is really tall, and skinny, and not just because he is a swimmer but. I feel like he is also rather toned given that he is a swimmer. Again i think Nortie carries the book at least so far so he is my top favorite because he keeps the story interesting.

  34. I would be friends with Jen because she is very kind and loving to everyone she meets and wants the best in her sister and herself. Also she goes through so much at her home life you wouldn't even know she has troubles at home cause she is such a good friend to everyone. I feel the book would be very different and not so much positivity in the book.

  35. A character I chose is Louie. Louie is the main person in Running Loose. You see everything from his life and what he is thinking. I imagine Louie as a skinny but built into his body as he is good at football and track. I would see Louie close to myself as I get mad easily but Louie just has that sense for what is wrong as he stands up for what is wrong. Which I don't know if I could do what he did. If Boomer wasn't in the book I think that would drastically change Louie and what all that went down throughout the story line.

    1. What are some characters that you have met through out your book and how do you relate to them through football? I'm also am reading the same book and I have noticed that Louie the main character has worked hard to start on the football team. Can you connect to him in anyway?

  36. So fare throughout the book I am reading which is Running Loose a lot of unexpected things have happened. One really big thing that has happened is that Louie the main character disagreed with what the coach was teaching the team so he quite the football team. something that I can relate to Louie is not agreeing with the coaches decisions. For example when I went out for volleyball freshman year and no matter how hard I worked during practice I wasn't able to play. So fare I have enjoyed the book.

  37. I am picking the character Jen. Even though she was sexually abused by both her dad and step dad she continues to stay very nice and and wants to do what is best for her and her sister. I would like to befriend Jen because I know she would be there for me, like she was for her friends and sister even when she was in the hospital

  38. Boomer is the character i will be writing about. I Envision Boomer to be very bulky and mid height. He is very racist and acts like he is on the top of the world. He is always the first to brag and tell about all the girls he gets with. So far, Boomer is the biggest villain when he popped louie in the mouth and is always tormenting him. I would not be friends with him, i would just try to stay away from him and not associate with him.

  39. My favorite and most liked character in the book is Louie. Louie has faced many obstacles throughout his high school journey as in loosing someone who was really close to him, his girlfriend. Quitting a sport because of an illegal hit and part of it was because Washington was black and was being targeted, and standing up for what he believes in is right and not backing down to anyone not even the principle of Trout high school. I had also lost someone around wrestling season last year that was close to me in my family and I am now trying out wrestling again this year and as of now i am enjoying it a lot. The last reason Louie is my favorite character is because he has a good sense of humor and gets along with everyone.

  41. My favorite character is Dillon. Dillon is complicated like me. He is a good kid at heart but he easily gets frustrated when things don't go his way or the way he expects it to. Dillon tries to get girls that are emotionally unavailable and not able to give him what he wants. Dillon is also involved in athletics but not in school sports because he doesn't believe in their values. Dillon has confrontation issues with his Principal and authority figures. Dillon is a very important character in this book. since his brother Preston died I feel the book is now speaking from his point of view to his brother.

  42. The character I'm choosing is Dillon because I feel bad for him mainly because of the fact that he witnessed his brothers suicide. Dillon in my mind would be classified as a troubled kid because of the situations he was put through in his life already. Dillon does not do well with people telling him what to do because he does not like to listen where i can relate to. Dillon is one of the main characters in this book.
